US Wrestler Adeline Gray Loses in Quarterfinals Upset

Adeline Gray was a heavy favorite in the 75-kilogram weight class

The dream matchup in the women's wrestling 75 kilogram class was ruined when the United States' Adeline Gray and Brazil's Aline da Silva Ferreira both lost in the quarterfinals.

Gray, the heavily favored three-time world champion, lost to Vasilisa Marzaliuk of Belarus 3-1 on Thursday. Marzaliuk finished fifth at the 2012 Olympics in the 72 kilogram class, and was third in the 2015 World Championships at 75 kilograms.

Brazil's crowd was fired up for da Silva Ferreira, a silver medalist from the 2014 World Championships, but she fell behind early and lost to Russia's Ekaterina Bukina 4-3.

There are two other Americans who will get a shot at wrestling medals on Thursday.

Helen Maroulis beat Sofia Mattsson of Sweden 5-0 in the semifinals in the 53-kilogram weight class. She will fight Japan's Saori Yoshida in the final match at 4:20 p.m. ET.

Elna Pirozhkova will fight for a bronze medal in the 63-kilogram weight class at 4:45 p.m. ET.
