Stu McNay, a Yale grad, is ranked 17 after eight races in the London 2012 Olympics.
He is part of a two-man team sailing a 470-class boat.
McNay and his teammate, Graham Biehl, finished in 18th place in Race 8 Monday afternoon in Weymouth, England.
Earlier in the day, the duo took sixth place during their Race 7. Race 8 is underway now.
There are two more races on Tuesday and the medal race is on Thursday at 8 a.m.
McNay and Biehl will have to make up ground in the last two races to make it into the medal race. Only the top 10 boats advance to the medal race.
