Auriemma Welcomes Frenetic Tourney Schedule

While Geno Auriemma wants his team to stop long enough to enjoy their accomplishments up to this point -- 31-0 overall record, 18-0 in the AAC, and the first-ever AAC regular-season champion -- there's still plenty of work to do.

The American Athletic Conference Tournament starts Friday and the Huskies play Saturday against the Cincinnati-UCF winner in the quarterfinal round. And unlike the regular season, where a team plays two or three times in a week, at tourney time, games are an everyday occurrence.

"My biggest worry about practice this time of year is this: How much are you supposed to do? How much are you supposed to run up and down the floor?” Auriemma said, via SNY.com's Carl Adamec. “If you run up and down the floor a lot, then you’re taking their legs away. If you don’t run up and down the floor enough, they lose their conditioning. It’s hard this time of year to figure out what is the absolute best thing to do.

“Playing three games in three days, if we get to do that, they’ll be OK with that.”

Ultimately, the goal is a national title but the Huskies aren't overlooking the AAC Tournament. The last two years, Notre Dame won the Big East regular-season title. You'd have to go back to Auriemma's first three years in Storrs to find a time when he went that long without a league title.

“It means a lot,” Kaleena Mosqueda-Lewis said. “We’re not going to take this as something small. We’re really excited about it. It’s my first regular season championship ever at UConn. So it means a lot.”
