Staples High School is the CIAC Class LL baseball champion for a second time in three years.
The Wreckers topped Southington baseball behind a standout performance from senior Chad Knight. The pitcher, who was drafted by the New York Yankees last week in the 2019 MLB Draft, pitched a complete game shutout, striking out 10.
Staples' Kevin Rabecs got an RBI sac fly to put the Wreckers on the board 1-0 in the fourth inning. From there, they scored on two errors to take the title, 3-0 over the Blue Knights.
"When you look around you see your best friends in the world and you're playing the game you love, we're all competing for the same goal, it was just the best feeling in the world,” Staples pitcher Chad Knight said.
"Wasn't really a Palmer day when balls were going to fly out of the park so we had to manufacture some runs,” Staples head coach Jack McFarland said. “We had to take some chances on some wild pitches and you know, Chad was Chad on the mound."
