UConn interim coach T.J. Weist said before the team's latest loss that Tim Boyle is no longer considered a freshman.
It is not accepted to make bad decisions whether you are a freshman or not," the coach said last week. … "You take role as starting quarterback and you are held responsible for your actions. If he were a senior we would be treating him the same way from a responsibility standpoint. He has maturity and understands it and works at it to get better. If he didn’t we might have moved on, but he does.”
But after Boyle completed 7-of-21 passes for just 47 yards and 2 interceptions in Saturday's 62-17 loss to UCF, it's not clear whether he will remain the team's starter when they take the field against, ahem, Louisville a week from Friday.
Weist mercifully pulled him from the UCF game and his replacement, redshirt freshman Casey Cochran fared much better, going 7-of-11 for 95 yards and a touchdown.
"We think we will re-evaluate it," Weist said of the quarterback job. "I want to look at the film how handled the situation. I thought he could have made some throws earlier that were better decisions. I didn't feel he had command of the passing game early on."
Whatever happens, Cochran says he will be ready.
"We've all been working hard at it all season, all the quarterbacks in here. We've got four great guys right now," he said, via the Hartford Courant. [Freshman QB] Kivon [Taylor] is a really great player. Chandler [Whitmer] has showed what he can do and Tim is a really good player so I think the best thing we do as quarterbacks we help each other out. ... I think we can all help each other out this week."
It's also not clear if Whitmer, the team's starter in 2012 and four games this season, will get another chance as the starter.
