Defenders Sale Could Be Done By May

The closing date for sale of the minor league baseball team is not set

The days of the Norwich Defenders could be over soon. The owner of the minor league baseball team said the sale of the team to a Virginia group could be complete by the end of the month.

Lou DiBella told the Day of New London that no closing date would be finalized until the Richmond, Va. groups files paperwork for officials at Minor League Baseball and Major League Baseball.

”I'm confident the deal is going to close,” DiBella told the newspaper.

According to a Richmond newspaper, the plans call for the Richmond group to buy the Defenders for about $15 million and move the team to Virginia at the end of the 2009 season.

The Eastern League and officials at Minor League Baseball and Major League Baseball must approve the deal.

Richmond still must approve a new stadium or major renovations to its existing rundown ballpark, the Diamond, before baseball officials would approve moving the team to Virginia, the Day reports.
