Diaco Not Ready to Name Starting QB

With the season opener 17 days away, the clock is ticking on who will end up under center when the Huskies face BYU. As it stands, two weeks of practice hasn't done much to separate redshirt senior Chandler Whitmer, redshirt sophomore Casey Cochran and sophomore Tim Boyle.

"All but a few rep differences, they're basically about the same in participation and blend," first-year coach Bob Diaco said, adding that the next few days will be critical in determining a favorite heading into the regular season.

"We need to continue to add to the overall evaluation so that we can find some kind of separator to make this decision," the coach continued. "If we had to make [the decision] today, it would be very hard to make. No one player at this point had clearly separated. Each one has had their particular moments of things that are very, very positive, and things that are very negative. We're pleased with all three. The quarterback position won't be a position that prevents us from winning."

Whomever ends up under center this much is certain: Interceptions are a non-starter, both literally and figuratively. Diaco made that clear earlier this summer when talking about the position.

"I'll hand it to the back 55 times, seriously, then we'll have a chance," he said at the time. "If you turn the ball over you have no chance."
