Freshman Williams Contributing Off Bench

Williams is one of three freshmen on UConn's bench.

Geno Auriemma has talked about getting more production from his bench and that starts with players knowing what they're supposed to be doing and then going out and doing it when they get the chance. Freshman Gabby Williams has made the most of recent opportunities, including a season-high 15-point effort against Tulsa this week.

“I think I’m starting to get my confidence back,” Williams told SNY.com's Carl Adamec. “It was kind of a rough week last week. So the main thing was just to bring all the energy back. I think it was mostly just my lack of energy and focus. When you start to get tired after traveling and all that stuff, I kind of let it get to me.

“My thing is I just want the coaches to know every time, ‘OK, Gabby is going to give us this when she gets in.’ I just want to be consistent in a few things.”

It's a perspective Auriemma undoubtedly appreciates.

“It’s not that Gabby doesn’t have the ability to do that, with a lot of these kids it’s being able to sustain it over a period of time,” the coach said. “Today was another example of how good she can really be. It’s something that we see here and there. We don’t see it all the time or enough times to make us happy or her happy. But the last couple of days have been good for her and today was great for her.”

The Huskies face SMU on Sunday at 3 p.m.
