Huskies Roll SMU, 87-28

Geno Auriemma's Huskies keep on keepin' on, the latest blowout victory came Sunday in Dallas against SMU. When it was over, UConn had outscored the Mustangs, 87-28, run their record to 14-1 overall (4-0 in the AAC), and senior Kaleena Mosqueda-Lewis finally broke Diana Taurasi's record for career 3-pointers.

Mosqueda-Lewis needed just three minutes to make her way into the record books.

“It felt good to have the title now and break the record. It’s nice to have it over,” Mosqueda-Lewis said. “I haven’t been worrying about it, everyone else has. I’ve just been playing.”

And that 3-pointer was the beginning of a 21-point run for the Huskies, who led by as much as 65 points.

"It was like there was a lid on the basket," SMU coach Rhonda Rompola said, via the Associated Press.

Meanwhile, Auriemma downplayed UConn's win over a clearly overmatched opponent.

“We’re not that much better than they are,” he said, via SNY.com's Carl Adamec. “We played pretty well after the first five minutes of the game and they didn’t make a single outside shot. I think they banked one in early on and that was pretty much it.

“It’s hard against us. It’s hard to play against us if you’re not making shots because we’re not going to go five minutes without making a bunch of shots. It’s fun watching us do some things but in the end I don’t think that’s the score you want to be playing at.”

Junior forward Breanna Stewart scored 19 points on 8 of 10 shooting even though she sat out the final 16 minutes.

“That’s the way Stewie is," Auriemma said. "She’s the kind of kid that wants to get off to a great start. I don’t particularly like the fact that threes are her way to get rolling. But a lot of times last year that kind of set the tone for her when all of a sudden she knocked down a couple of shots early and took off from there. Stewie is Stewie.”
