Canadiens continue nostalgia kick, trade for Mathieu Schneider

Remember Mathieu Schneider? He was a pretty darn good defenseman for the Montreal Canadiens from 1987-1995, and then bounced around to the Los Angeles Kings and Detroit Red Wings before disappearing mysteriously.

Turns out he was actually acquired by the Atlanta Thrashers earlier this season, with whom he's a minus-10 and has scored one-third of his total points (15) in the last two weeks. Gotta love when veteran players work their hardest as the trade deadline nears; in Schneider's case, it seems to have worked out pretty well.

The Canadiens have reacquired him from the Thrash for a second- and a third-round draft choice, according to TSN and RDS (translated awkwardly). So wait ... the Thrashers are sellers then?

Cheap snark about the Thrash aside, Schneider's a player who's averaging 21:02 TOI per game, and has played in all situations for Atlanta this season. He's a good depth defenseman on this Montreal roster, and no doubt will be a solid veteran presence in the locker room. Although it is a little surreal to think that the Habs just traded for a defenseman who won a Stanley Cup with the current head coach as teammates back in 1993.

With the pressures on the Habs this season, this won't be the only move GM Bob Gainey makes in the coming weeks.
