Classic Clips: Don Cherry's techno video, sight you can't un-see

Don Cherry kicked off the second round in classic style last night on CBC, with an eccentric purple striped suit. It may have hurt your eyes; now it's time for Cherry to assault other senses.

The video you are about to see has been around for a while, but there's a good chance many of you haven't seen it or if you have, had quickly erased it from your mind. I present you, Don Cherry's "Rock 'em Sock 'em Techno".

Can you feel the 1980's European techno vibe? Did the background track want to make you reach for your glow sticks, Chess King shirt, and dial up your buddy Dieter from Sprockets?

Everybody, sing!

Let's go!

Cherry lent his "rapping" abilities in a collaboration with Toronto-based techno group BKS. In 1993, Much Music (Canada's MTV) named "Rock 'em Sock 'em Techno" the worst music video of the year. Personally, I would have picked Snow's "Informer", because I can appreciate a hilarious techno parody.

Let's go!

If only Cherry would produce one of these videos on an annual basis, more people wouldn't think he's a few sandwiches short of a picnic. OK, maybe not. Could you picture Ron McLean as the DJ Jazzy Jeff to Cherry's Fresh Prince? The two could replace Stompin' Tom Connors at the next NHL Awards.

Let's go!

Missed some of the lyrics because you were too busy digging a pencil into your eardrum? Here's some of Cherry's lyrical stylings with a hockey twist:

"He can dangle, he can score, who else, Bobby Orr!"

Let's go!

"Who's the best I often ponder, right now it's Stevie Wonder (Yzerman)!"

Let's go!

"Listen listen to what I say, play that game the Canadian way, Hockey man is what I am!"

Let's go!

Wreckless Conjecture, who the found the video himself earlier this week, put it best:

"If you can make it to the forty-five second mark before your small intestine begins leaking, you're a stronger person than I."

Let's go!

If you have any suggestions for future Don Cherry techno lyrics, we'd like to hear them.
