Evidently, garish barber pole-like striped alternative jerseys are the new black.
On Feb. 20, the AHL Philadelphia Phantoms will honor Philadelphia Flyers teams of the 1970s by donning "a Broad Street Bullies-themed jersey" for their game against the Portland Pirates, the Buffalo Sabres' farm team. (We know: A sudden jersey change in order to generate revenue, in a game against a team affiliated with the Sabres. Oh, the irony.)
The game-worn Bullies sweaters will be auctioned off after the game in Bullies Restaurant, with "a portion of the proceeds will benefit the Comcast-Spectacor Foundation." The whole stunt is part of the Phantoms' farewell to the Spectrum, which according to the team was "one of the most loathed places to play for other NHL organizations" because of the Flyers ... uh ... "work ethic" back in the 1970s.
Despite looking a little like a candy corn child witch, the sweaters are cool in a penitentiary sort of way. We'd go as far as to say they look like a jersey one of those Federal League goons from "Slap Shot" might have worn during a montage of fights.
Are they an improvement over the Phantoms' current jerseys? Better question: Is the logo for the Phantoms' Family Fun Pack (right) better than their current logo? We say yes.

One more bit of Philly fashion news from the great Icethetics: The Flyers are expected to wear their orange third jerseys as their home sweaters beginning next season. We're not even going to pass/fail that one, because it's a massive pass. (Icethetics also hints at new third jerseys for the Wild, the Flames and the Predators next season, while the Blackhawks are adopting their Winter Classic jersey as their third.)
