Suffield Athlete Hoping to Make Spot on Olympic Luge Team

Emily Sweeney, a 24-year-old athlete from Suffield, is competing for a chance at her Olympic debut and hopes to secure one of the two spots left for the luge team.

“If it happens, which I’m once again doing everything I can to make that happen, I really don’t know how I’m going to react,” she said. “It’s been 14 years or working towards making the Olympic team. I’ve known I’ve wanted to go to the Olympics since I was 7 years old.”

In 2010, when Emily was 16, her older sister Megan beat her out for a spot to compete in Vancouver.

“I think having the negative experiences of not making the team, I don’t have this shiny idea of what the Olympic are any more. So I guess I am more focused on the process,” she said.

Emily needs a top 10 finish in the next two races to earn a spot on Team U.S.A. to compete in Pyeongchang.

In 2016, she won silver medals in the Park City World Cup sprint race and singles race.
