It's not unusual for members of Geno Auriemma's UConn team to represent their country during the summer. It's also not unusual for future Huskies to don the red, white and blue, which is exactly what 2015 commit Napheesa Collier did over the weekend when she helped the United States U-18 national team defeat Candada 104-74 to win the gold medal in the FIBA Americas tournament.
Collier had 18 points and six rebounds in the route of our neighbors to the north.“I feel awesome. It feels awesome to play and win for the USA,” she said, according to SNY.com.
Meanwhile, teammate A'ja Wilson, considered one of the best players in the 2015 class and future South Carolina Gamecock, added 25 points and 11 rebounds and earned Most Outstanding Player honors.
“All my teammates deserve MVP,” Wilson said. ” They are great girls on and off the court. To be chosen is a great feeling, and I’m blessed to be in this position.”
The U.S. went 5-0 in the tournament, winning their games by an average of 44.8 points. The gold medal was the team's seventh straight in U-18 play -- and eighth overall -- and the U.S. is 48-2 in FIBA Americas championship play dating back to 1988.
