The anticipation from UConn fans is building following recent chatter of college athletics moving back to the Big East Conference.
University leaders have yet to make an announcement but the Board of Trustees is set to meet this week. The move could be huge for supporters.
Kevin Richards is one of those excited fans waiting for a possible return to the Big East.
“Everybody remembers the success of the basketball and football team,” said Richards. “I think it would be great.”
Those memories of competing against the likes of Villanova and Georgetown could soon return.
The Huskies are a founding member of the Big East, but, left amid conference realignment.
All teams including both men’s and women’s basketball left for the American Athletic Conference.
One area of concern is the future of UConn’s football program.
The Big East conference does not allow the gridiron game.
The move would certainly impact Women’s Basketball Coach Geno Auriemma.
“I’m as anxious as anybody,” said Coach Auriemma. “There’s been a lot of talk over the years.”
Leaders are staying tight lipped about the potential move, issuing this statement to NBC Connecticut:
“It is our responsibility to always be mindful of what is in the best interest of our student athletes, our fans and our future. With that being said, we have been and remain proud members of the American Athletic Conference.”
Tyler Simard is a long-time UConn basketball fan.
“Returning to the Big East would help us recruit the right guys and get back to hopefully a National Championship,” said Simard. “If we do make this move, hopefully, we’ll see some bigger schools, and more exciting games,”
The Board of Trustees are set to meet on Wednesday to discuss a potential decision.
