The Huskies landed their first commitment for the class of 2016: Donovan Williams, a 6-4, 205-pound quarterback out of Woodbridge, Va.
Williams had orally committed to James Madison last month, and he also has a scholarship from Fordham. At UConn he'll join a wide-open quarterback race, though there may be more certainty at the position in a year's time, when Williams will join the competition. Currently, Tim Boyle, sophomore transfer Bryant Shirreffs and true freshman Tyler Davis are battling for snaps, and next summer Williams and JUCO transfer Garrett Anderson will join them.
During his junior season at Hylton High School, Williams passed for 1,015 yards, rushed for 718 more and scored 18 touchdowns.
If it seems late for an FBS program to get its first commitment for '16 -- it is. But that's by design; the Huskies will be selective, targeting only 13 recruits, which is half of the allowable 25.
