UConn Rolls Over California, 80-47

The UConn women's team moved to 12-0 Sunday with a convincing 80-47 win over California at Madison Square Garden. Sophomore forward Breanna Stewart led all scorers with 29 points and her 10 rebounds were second only to Stefanie Dolson, who had 11.

Bria Hartley (12 points) and Kaleena Mosqueda-Lewis (10 points) were the only other players to hit double-figures.

But the story was Stewart, who was the most outstanding player in last year's Final Four and is making a case for the nation's best player. For an idea of just how good she it midway through her second college season, coach Geno Auriemma -- who has won championships with the likes of Diana Taurasi and Maya Moore -- had this to say Sunday afternoon:

“We have never had anyone like her," he said, via the Hartford Courant. "We had some of the greatest players ever to play college basketball play here and we’ve never had anyone like her. Maya Moore was unique. Diana Taurasi and Tina Charles were unique. But we have never had anyone who has the God-given things that Breanna has. … Because you can not describe her [as a player] it makes her an impossible matchup against everyone we play. Unless you have an athletic 6-4 kid to defend her you can’t stop her from scoring. She is just too quick for your average big kid. And she shoots over any guard who tries to stop her.

... We talk about getting her 20 shots a game and we’ve never said that about anyone else who has played here.”

Think about that for a second.

Auriemma has been at UConn for a quarter-century and won eight national titles, and Stewart is still one of the truly special players he has coached.

Wow.
