Wii Comes Home for the Holidays

From Ringling Bros. to Twilight

A flood of games get released for the holiday season and the vast majority are geared to families who spend their game nights around a game console. Here’s a look at five new family-centric games for the Nintendo Wii.

The circus has been recreated for the Wii as Ringling Brothers and Barnum and Bailey march out the "Greatest Show on Earth" for action compatible with the balance board and standard controllers. It’s not the Gunther Gebel Williams stuff of your childhood, but there’s plenty of variety here to keep small kids interested.

Meanwhile, Nickelodeon’s ‘Dora the Explorer’ and that shrill parchment friend of hers ‘The Map’ help lead the way for “Dora Saves the Crystal Kingdom.” It’s colorful, reasonably challenging and one of a handful of options for young girls.

Nickelodeon’s Kai-Lan makes her video game debut in 2K Play’s ‘Ni Hao, Kai-Lan: Super Game Day,” another good option for young girls. This is a collection of mini-games for children just old enough to hold the controller. This could help build the coordination needed for other kids games, like Konami’s Dance Dance Revolution Hottest Party 3. In that game, which bundles a dance mat with 50 party hits, the folks at Konami are even touting a workout mode to join in on the Wii Fit craze.

For something less loud than all of the above and certainly more brooding, “Scene It? Twilight” is a trivia challenge that tests your knowledge about the movie. The Wii controller helps you buzz in for hundreds of multiple-choice questions as the Wii takes you from Phoenix to Forks, Washington to the Crystal Kingdom and back for the holidays.
