Man Takes Backhoe on Drunken Joyride: Cops

Residents were concerned when a backhoe started smashing mailboxes.

A 25-year-old Farmington man is accused of taking construction equipment on a drunken joyride through his upscale neighborhood, smashing mailboxes and causing a lot of damage.

Police arrested Adam Bergenty on Pinnacle Road at 11:50 p.m. on Sunday about half an hour after getting calls from residents who were anxious about the backhoe driving up and down their street, according to the Hartford Courant and the Bristol Press.

Bergenty is accused of damaging several mailboxes, road barriers and utility equipment while driving a truck the town of Farmington uses for roadwork, according to the Courant.

He was able to get it started using the master key from a previous job, according to reports.

Bergenty was also charged with first-degree criminal mischief, evading responsibility, interfering with an officer, operation while under the influence, reckless driving and using a motor vehicle without permission.

He is due in court on April 26.
