An Unusual Ride: Commuters Walk Into Subway Dance Party

The party, caught on video, is now going viral on YouTube

Some subway riders didn't know when they entered a train car with velour red rope that they had walked into a dance party.

Inside was a DJ with a soundboard, strobe lights, glow sticks and music playing. The party, caught on video, is now going viral on YouTube.

Meir Kalmanson, 25, and his friends threw the party on March 26 in order to help commuters connect with each other. They said they hope to start a conversation and break down imaginary walls between New York City commuters.

“One guy told me he was in a depressing state of mind for weeks now, and this act of joy and unity opened his eyes to happiness and the kindness of people,” Kalmanson told NBC New York.

In the video, some passengers on the 3 train seem perplexed at first and some seem unaffected. First one, then two, then three brave folks get the underground party started.

As more and more passengers began to join each other dancing in the confined space to Tobu’s “Mesmerize,” bystanders laughed and applauded. Those standing on the subway platforms smile, take notice, and some join in.

Kalmanson and his team set up their dance party after rush hour so they would have space for both their equipment and people to move. People were laughing out loud and grabbing their cameras as the team was setting up, he said. When he began to dance and urged others to join, Kalmanson described the atmosphere as “amazing” and “magical.”

“I love making videos that bring positive energy and smiles to the people who watch my work," he said.
