“Twilight” Fans Geared Up For Overnight Launch Parties

It’s going to be a late night for Twilight fans.

The author of the series, Stephenie Meyer of Hartford, hit a home run with Twilight. Then the series exploded when it hit the big screen last year.

Friday night, it was finally released on DVD.

For those of you who aren’t familiar with Twilight, it’s a Romeo and Juliet style romance between a teen and a vampire. They can do a little smootchy-poo, but that’s about it.  Any more than that would mean another teenage vampire (flashback to Buffy and Angel, anyone?).  Surprisingly, the hunk vampire ends up preaching to his crush about abstinence.  And that’s how you know it’s science fiction.

Stores around the state geared up for the Twilight midnight rush.

A number of release parties were planned.  Hot Topic stores in several malls in the area – Buckland, Westfarms, and Enfield Square – had parties starting at 10 p.m.

Borders Books & Music in Farmington also had a party at 10 p.m. It kicked off with a “baseball and vampires” trivia contest.

“They play baseball in the books. So we’re taking that premise and using it for trivia,” said David Battaglino, Sales Manager of the Farmington Borders. “There will be different teams, a diamond, innings, etc”.

They also had Twilight movie awards and some other surprise activities.

“At first, we weren’t expecting a very big crowd,” he said. “Now we’re going to have to start handing out bracelets at 9 p.m. – we’ve gotten a ton of calls and are expecting a lot of people.”

Don’t want to deal with the crowds?  Starting at 12:01am, Comcast customers can watch the movie On Demand. It’s $4.99 for standard definition and $5.99 for high-def. You can watch it as many times as you want in the next 24 hours. Or at least until twilight.
