Sold! Bid on Stuff in Abandoned Storage Units

As bills go unpaid, storage auctions are becoming big business

Storage unit auctions are on the rise across the nation, according to the National Auctioneers Association.

As those hit hard by the credit crunch spiral down, many can no longer afford to pay the rent to store their stuff, and just abandon it. So the storage company announces an auction, throws open the unit's door and opens the floor to bids.

So what's in there? It's a bit of a crapshoot, the AP reports -- at these public auctions, you usually can't look too closely or touch the items -- but in many cases, the units are crammed with luxury goods, the remnants of a life lived beyond its means (which is probably why this stuff is up for auction in the first place). After one buyer reportedly paid around $500 for a unit, he found a $10,000 Harley Davidson under some boxes.
