8/5: A Cultural Kaleidoscope

GET UP, STAND UP: Actually, it's the Rise Up Remix Block Party in Hartford Tonight. The Wadsworth Atheneum is teaming up with The Amistad Center for Art & Culture, Taste of the Caribbean and Jerk Festival, West Indian Social Club and Young Studios to celebrate the Caribbean tonight. The event takes place on the Travelers Plaza from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. It will include a showing of the critically acclaimed musical documentary "Rise Up". The award-winning film takes a look at the Reggae culture in Jamaica and has been called a "cinematic journey into the heart of Jamaica". One of the stars of the movie, Reggae artist Turbulence, will perform in the plaza tonight. You can also check out an art and photography exhibition illustrating the power of music. It's $5 to get it.

BLUEGRASS BONANZA: If you're looking for something a bit different, head to the Podunk Bluegrass Music Festival. The annual event kicks off in East Hartford's Martin Park. This is the 15th year for the festival, and it included Bluegrass bands from around the country, including Ricky Skaggs and Kentucky Thunder, Hot Buttered Rum, Mike Cleveland & Flamekeepers and Freight Hoppers (we think these are some pretty big names in Bluegrass). Depending on what day you go, tickets range from $10 to $143 for a four-day camping pass. The gates open tonight at 5 p.m.
