Swimming With the Dogs — Because They Get Warm Too

After weeks of fall masquerading as summer, summer is here. It’s been hot and we all need to cool off, including our puppies.

That’s what the whole second annual West Hartford Dog Swim -- "Pooch Plunge" -- is all about. Pets being treated like children, allowed to float, leash-free, in a place where only people have swum before.

It happens Monday, Aug. 24 at Kennedy Pool on Oakwood Avenue from 5 to 7:30 p.m.

The question is, once puppy swim is over, who gets the job of sucking up what the canines left behind, whether hair or something even less pleasant.

If you want your pooch to chill like a country clubber, Fido needs to be licensed and wearing his town tags and you must control and pick up after him.

Fifi or Rex can swim for an hour so all dogs have a chance to swim.

The cost is $5 per dog and proceeds  benefit the West Hartford Dog Park Coalition's mission of creating an enclosed, off-leash dog park in town.

The group says several possible sites are being examined and anywhere from $45,000 to $60,000 in grants and donations would be needed to build the park. The estimated cost includes amenities such as benches, watering stations and waste bag dispensers.

Let your pooch off the lease to take a plunge in a West Hartford pool.
