Few people are not aware of Pat Tillman’s tragic story, but Marie Tillman lived with the tragedy each day of losing her husband, the NFL star who left pro sports to serve his country.
Pat Tillman was so moved by the tragedy of 9/11 that he walked away from his multimillion-dollar contract with the Arizona Cardinals in May 2002 to serve.
Marie and Pat Tillman were just newlyweds as Pat’s NFL career was really taking off. On April 22, 2004, Pat was killed in the line of duty while in Afghanistan.
Through it all, Marie has found the strength to rebuild her life. She has written “The Letter: My Journey Through Love, Loss & Live,” a book that recounts how one of Pat’s final letters helped her overcome tremendous grief.
She has become an advocate for veteran affairs and established the Pat Tillman Foundation, an organization dedicated to assisting veterans and military spouses through education and community.
On May 8, she will be in Connecticut and speak at the 2012 Center for HOPE Annual Luncheon.
The event will be held at 11 a.m. at the Country Club of Darien and all proceeds will benefit the Center for HOPE and The Den for Grieving Kids, Family Centers’ programs offering critical illness and bereavement support to residents of lower Fairfield County.
