This Weekend: Where Eagles Soar

Majestic bald eagles soar through the sky in Southbury this time of year. The birds flock to the Shepaug Dam off River Road because the power plant keeps the Housatonic River ice-free, so the eagles can find fish, their primary food source.

An observation deck has been set up along the dam that allows visitors to watch the bald eagles. Connecticut Audubon Society volunteers staff the area and they can tell you everything you need to know about the birds of prey. Did you know one bird has 70,000 feathers? One day in January, 21 eagles were spotted near the Shepaug Dam. That surpasses last year's high of 20.

The observation area is open Wednesdays, Saturdays and Sundays. Visiting is free, but reservations are required.
