1/14: Quilts, Music, Art and Cocktails

BENDING YOUR EAR:  Take a trip to the deep South tonight without ever leaving Hartford. Meet the women of "Gee's Bend," starting tonight at Hartford Stage. The show tells the story of a group of Alabama women who sing hauntingly beautiful gospel songs as they create magnificent handmade quilts. Along the way, they triumph over racial segregation and geographic isolation to achieve economic freedom. The show runs through Feb. 14. Tickets are $23 to $66. Click here for more info and show-times.

MUSIC MISH-MASH:  Singer-songwriter J.D. Souther is taking the stage in Fairfield tonight at the Fairfield Theatre Company-StageOne. Souther has been around since the '70s and since then, he's helped to put Southern California-style country-rock onto the airwaves. He's co-written hit songs for the Eagles Including "Heartache Tonight" and "New Kid in Town") and he's even got his own top-10 hit with 1979s "You're Only Lonely." Since then, he's returned with a new and ambitious amalgam of rock, country, jazz and even Latin music. Tickets are $32. Show is at 7:30 p.m.

C'MON GET HAPPY (Have we used that one before?):  We're taking you to New Haven tonight for a unique Happy Hour experience that's teaming up Artspace New Haven and its Ninth Square neighbor 116 Crown. 116 Crown, one of the city's hottest small-plate bistros, features a special drink at a special price each week and guests can enjoy the libations while perusing Artspace's latest exhibitions (and there are plenty opening tonight). Donations to the gallery are more than welcome. Runs 6 to 8pm.
