5/20: The Classics

FARE ENOUGH:  If you made a checklist for a quality night out on the town, it would probably include some (or all) of the following:  good food, wine, beer, good company and some quality scenery.  Well, check and check.  Head down to the Connecticut River Museum in Essex tonight for RiverFare 2010.  The toast-of-the shoreline has everything mentioned above plus a cigar bar and a silent auction.  And it all overlooks Essex Harbor.  You and 500 (or so) of your closest friends will get to enjoy the wares of restaurants like The Back Porch, Copper Beach Inn, Dagmar's Desserts and Essex Coffee & Tea.  Your $60 admission price will get you all the food and drink, with the proceeds going to support the Connecticut River Museum's mission to increase public awareness and access to the heritage, culture, and natural beauty of New England’s Great River.  RiverFare 2010 will last from         6 p.m.-9 p.m.

EXPLOSIVITY:  How do you get a 16-year-old boy to listen to classical music?  Try putting fireworks in the title.  Head to the Bushnell tonight (with little Jimmy in tow) for Hartford Symphony Orchestra: Orchestral Fireworks!  The Symphony will perform the 1919 suite from the Firebird by Stravinsky.  There's also an Introduction and Rondo (not Rajon) Carpriccioso by Saint-Saëns played with violin soloist Karina Canellakis.  Tickets are $30-$62.  And if you miss tonight's 8 p.m. performance, you can catch the show through Sunday.

AN EASY DAY'S NIGHT:  The Stones may still be going strong, but time and circumstance have made it certain that we'll never see the Beatles back on stage together.  But, as will all great art, the music lives on.  Tonight in Waterbury, you can see Abbey Road, a Connecticut-based Beatles Tribute Band.  The faux Fab Four will grace the stage at the Palace Theater in Waterbury.  Tickets are $35, and all the proceeds go to a great cause with an even better name.  "Are You Dense?" is a nonprofit organization dedicated to the early detection and screening of breast cancer.  The show starts at 7:30 p.m.
