Top Federal Prosecutor Dana Boente to Resign

Dana Boente has submitted his resignation as federal prosecutor for the Eastern District of Virginia, his spokesman tells the News4 I-Team.

Boente, 63, announced his plans on Friday in an email to staff. The email did not spell out a reason for his departure, spokesman Joshua Steuve said.

Boente oversaw dozens of high-profile prosecutions, including against ISIS sympathizers and former Virginia Governor Bob McDonnell.

Boente briefly served as acting U.S. Attorney General during the openings weeks of the Trump administration, after the firing of Sally Yates.

His resignation will be effective upon the confirmation of his successor by the U.S. Senate. He plans to stay on until a successor is in place.

Boente also serves as acting assistant attorney general for national security, and will vacate that post once his successor is confirmed.

Boente was appointed to the Virginia post by the Obama administration.
