Slippery roads remain, strong winds cause thousands of power outages

NBCUniversal Media, LLC

Make sure to be careful of ice and slippery surfaces on this cold Presidents' Day, and strong winds are causing thousands of power outages in Connecticut.

Eversource is reporting 8,000 outages while United Illuminating has around 100. At one point during the storm, there were over 20,000 outages.

Wind gusts reached 40 to 50 mph. More power outages are possible.

“Crews are making solid progress restoring power to customers as quickly and safely as possible, but the electric system continues to take on damage from the layers of ice that are weighing down trees, and those limbs and branches can come down much more easily with the strong winds we’re expecting today,” Eversource president of Connecticut Electric Operations Steve Sullivan said in s atatement.

The intersection of New Britain Avenue and New Park Avenue is closed in West Hartford due to downed traffic lights and wires.

In Colchester, a traffic signal came down, closing the intersection of Route 85, Main Street and Broadway, according to the first selectman.

Highs are in the upper 20s and 30s, but the wind is making it feel colder. The feels-like temperatures are cold and are mostly in the teens.

There are icy surfaces everywhere. While highways and main roads may be OK, any untreated and treated surfaces could be slippery. Use caution.

“The icy road conditions, especially on the side streets, have also made travel difficult for our crews – impeding their efforts to get where they’re needed. Our crews have been working tirelessly to respond to community priorities such as blocked roads while working to clear damage and make necessary repairs to the electric system. We brought in additional crews to support the restoration effort, and our team is committed to staying on the job around-the-clock until every customer has their power back,” Sullivan said.

Tuesday and Wednesday will be chilly.
