Dry Conditions Spark Brush Fires

Brush fires are reported in Litchfield, Burlington and Southington.

Firefighters across the state battled brush fires on Monday in Litchfield, Burlington, Suffield and Southington.

About two acres of brush off of Mount Vernon Road was burning in Southington, according to fire officials.  The terrain in the area was making it difficult for firefighters to extinguish the blaze.  Southington called in Wolcott firefighters to help control the flames.

In Suffield, fire charred between four and five acres in the brush off of Quarry Lane Monday afternoon, according to the Suffield Fire Department.  Additional manpower was called in to douse the blaze.  No homes were damaged.

By Monday afternoon, the temperatures had reached record highs and the state Department of Environmental Protection issued a fire danger of high.

The fire danger is high as offshore pressure continues to bring dry, mild conditions.
