FIRST ALERT: Severe Thunderstorm Warning Issued for Parts of the State

NBC Connecticut First Alert meteorologists are continuing to monitor the severe weather threat for this afternoon and a severe thunderstorm warning has been issued for parts of the state.

A severe thunderstorm warning has been issued for Fairfield County until 8:30 p.m. on Saturday.

A severe thunderstorm warning was issued for Windham County until 4:15 p.m. on Saturday.

Our meteorologists expect the bulk of the thunderstorm activity between 4 p.m. and 8 p.m.

Severe thunderstorms, by definition, contain winds at or over 58 mph and hail larger than the size of a quarter. Strong winds, heavy rain, lightning, and hail are expected in the strongest storms that develop.

On Sunday, a pocket of anomalously cold temperatures in the upper levels of the atmosphere will promote another round of showers and thunderstorms. Gusty winds and hail are possible. Occasionally, these setups can produce waterspouts on Long Island Sound.
