Cinco de Mayo isn’t an American holiday, but you’d never know it because it’s widely celebrated here. And this year, it combines drinking with the fun of a masquerade ball!
In the United States, the holiday is essentially a day to celebrate Mexican culture; celebrations include dancing, food, and music. Ok, but really, a chance to spend time with our two favorite Mexican immigrants: Jose Cuervo and Coronas.
East of the river? And feeling lucky? How about a stop at Margaritas in East Hartford? It boasts one of the biggest and craziest celebrations with a chance to win trip for two to Mexico and 1 million pesos, that’s about $70,000.
If you just want to head out for a Mexican meal, on May 5 there’s an all-local Cinco de Mayo dinner at River Tavern, 23 Main St. in Chester. The restaurant has a price-fixed dinner for the night.
So what is Cinco de Mayo and why is it celebrated? May 5th was a big day in the French-Mexican War. That’s the day that the Mexican Army defeated French forces in the battle of the Puebla back in 1862. Like we need a reason.
