A black bear attacked and killed a miniature horse in Southbury Saturday night, according to the state Department of Energy and Environmental Protection.
Crews from DEEP were called to respond to Lum Lot Road around 7 p.m. Saturday because a 150-pound female bear was attacking a horse confined to a paddock. One horse, 15-year-old Savannah, died. A second horse in the paddock was not hurt.
The bear was not tagged and Environmental Conservation Police euthanized her. A necropsy will be performed to determine if the bear was sick with anything such as rabies, according to DEEP.
Frank Moon and his wife Heidi own the horses. He said their daughter, who was over for the Thanksgiving holiday, was heading to her vehicle when they heard the horse screaming. He grabbed a flashlight and saw the bear. He called police and environmental officials.
