Bradley Airport to Get Full Body Scanners

Passengers at Bradley Airport may have to pass through another level of security.

The airport is getting what are known as full-body scanners. The Advanced Imaging Technology machines can screen passengers for objects that may be concealed under their clothes. Bradley Airport is getting seven of the machines, and the first two will be installed within weeks.

"Our first priority for air travel must always be the safety of passengers," Senator Chris Dodd said. "This technology will allow security officials to detect hidden threats safely and quickly without overburdening Bradley's passengers."

The machines use technology that projects low-level X-ray beams to create a reflection of the body. The TSA says it has implemented strict measures to protect passenger privacy. The image of the passenger cannot be stored, transmitted or printed, and is deleted immediately after being viewed. The TSA also insists the technology meets national health and safety standards.

Passengers will be able to opt-out of this type of screening.
