Shoppers Struck at Bridgeport Store

Five people were injured in the crash.

Five people were injured when a car crash through a grocery store in Bridgeport Friday afternoon.  The crash was captured on surveillance video.

Police and fire crews responded to Compare Food Market at 1050 East Main Street around 3 p.m. When the arrived, they found the car completely inside the store.

There were two people in the car, and at least one had to be extricated from the vehicle, according to emergency crews at the scene. Three people inside the store were injured, as were the two people in the car. All five people went to local hospitals with minor injuries and have been released.

Police said the driver of a Honda Sedan was trying to park, but instead hit the gas and slammed through the front doors of the supermarket.

"I turned to pack some groceries and then out of nowhere I saw the car coming and then accelerating, turning right," said Gisela Cein, a cashier at the market.

Investigators believe the driver may have suffered a medical issue that made him lose control.

All five people went to local hospitals with minor injuries and have been released.
