Car Found in Water Belonged to Naked Man at Bar: Police

A car found submerged in Long Island Sound in New Haven Tuesday morning belonged to a man who was hospitalized after drinking too much the night before, according to New Haven police.

Emergency crews responded to South Water Street to retrieve the car.  The car was found a few hundred feet from the boat launch at Sound School, police said.

The car was empty and there were no signs of anything suspicious, according to police.

Investigators determined the owner and located him and his wife at Yale-New Haven Hospital.  He had been sent there the night before after West Haven police found him naked and throwing things at Pete's Bar & Lounge on Captain Thomas Boulevard in West Haven on Monday night, according to police.  He appeared to be intoxicated, they said.

New Haven police asked the man where his car was, and he told them it was still at the bar, police said.

"He was surprised to learn its fate, Sgt. Steven Teague said.

Officers did not identify the car's owner.

Police don't believe the owner drove the car into the water, but they still don't know who did.
