College Athletics Employee Accused of Having Child Porn

A member of Sacred Heart University's athletics department has been arrested on child pornography charges.

The school's assistant athletic director for communications, Gene Gumbs, 49, of Middletown, is accused of possession of child porn and importing it. Both charges are felonies.

The charges are connected to an incident that was reported on July 24, 2009, the Middletown Press reports.

School officials said he resigned on Friday.

Gumbs’ lawyer, Richard Rothstein, told the court last month that his client serves as a statistician for the Boston Red Sox for five years and works at Fenway Park.

Gumbs posted bail and is due back in court on Monday.
