NBC Universal, Inc.

Officials said a 33-year-old man died after his kayak capsized on Lake Quonnipaug in Guilford. It’s the second death in the water this weekend, and the fifth in the last two months.

A 33-year-old man has died after his kayak capsized in Lake Quonnipaug in Guilford on Sunday, according to the Connecticut Department of Environmental Energy and Protection.

Emergency crews were called to the lake after getting a report of a missing kayaker.

Authorities said the man from Orange apparently lost his paddle and when he stood up to grab it, the kayak capsized.

Captain Keith Williams from DEEP EnCon Police said the man was not wearing a life jacket.

“From what we understand from family members, he was not a strong a swimmer,” Williams said.

Eventually searchers said they found the man. Branford firefighters performed CPR and attempted life-saving efforts on him.

He was then transported to Yale New Haven Hospital where authorities said he later died. His identity has not been released.
