A fire truck was struck while at an unrelated crash on Interstate 91 south in Windsor Locks on Wednesday morning.

State police said the fire truck was blocking the right and right center lanes of four just before exit 38 after a crash.

The fire truck was parked and unoccupied when it was struck around 4 a.m. by a Suffield woman driving a Ford Escape.

The woman was transported to St. Francis Hospital to be treated for suspected minor injuries. No firefighters were injured.

She was found to be at fault for the crash and was issued infractions for traveling too fast for conditions and failure to move over or slow down for an emergency vehicle, according to state police.

Drivers are reminded to move over or slow down for stopped emergency vehicles such as fire trucks, police vehicles, ambulances, tow trucks, CT DOT and other highway maintenance vehicles.

State trooper Pedro Muniz said there were more than 860 move-over violations last year.

“That's not to count the vehicles that didn't move over when we can't enforce that law because we're at an accident or wherever," he said.

Windsor Locks Fire Chief Gary Ruggiero said it could be a while before the truck is back in service and it typically takes two years to replace.

And it’s costly.

We're talking $800,000 to $1 million for a piece of apparatus and now it's gone, which obviously that can be replaced. You can't replace lives," Ruggiero said.
