FIRST ALERT: Excessive Heat Prompts School Early Dismissals, Closures

Several schools are dismissing early Wednesday because of extreme heat.

An excessive heat warning has been issued for Hartford County through Wednesday night and there is a heat advisory for the rest of the state, prompting schools to announce early dismissals and even a closure Wednesday.

Derby Public Schools decided to cancel classes Wednesday while several school districts announced an early release for Wednesday.

For some districts, including Milford, Naugatuck and West Haven, this is the second day in a row students that students are being sent home early.

Some students are heading to school amid very high temperatures and schools are doing what they can to keep children cool.

Other districts canceled after-school activities Tuesday due to the heat. In West Haven temperatures in classrooms in the Washington School approached 90 degrees. Combined with high humidity, the heat index is close to 100 degrees.
