Power crews spent the day Tuesday trying to restore electricity to thousands still in the dark after Monday’s powerful windstorm.
Monday's strong winds brought down trees and power lines across the state, knocking out power and forcing some schools to start late on Tuesday.
As of noon Tuesday, power was still out for more than 5,500 Eversource customers. The company said as of 3:50 p.m. Monday that they had restored power to as many as 22,000 customers throughout the day.
Towns and cities across the state reported road closures on Monday due to downed trees and wires.
Crews are still working around the state to clean up those downed trees and wires on Tuesday.
Multiple roads in Simsbury, Chaplin, Putnam, Lebanon and Preston are closed after trees, wires and poles came down. See the most updated list of road closures here.
Several roads were closed around Enfield Monday after wind brought down trees and wires. Powder Hill Road was closed and Route 5 was closed between Pease and Franklin streets.
A tree came down on the Marion Avenue exit off Interstate 84 West in Southington Monday and crews responded the 400 block of South River Road in Tolland to investigate reports of wires down. Earlier, a tree and wires came down on Tolland Turnpike in Tolland.
Ashford announced schools in town would close at 11:30 a.m. Monday because of a power outage. Afterschool activities were also canceled.
In Avon, afternoon school buses leaving the Talcott Mountain Science Center and Academy were delayed Monday after a tree came down across Montevideo Drive. Parents said students were delayed for hours.
Power lines came down in Milford on High Street and the road was closed between West Main Street and Darina Place.
Power outages also forced Ridgefield to dismiss several schools early. Ridgefield High School was dismissed at 11 a.m., Scotts Ridge Middle School at 11:45 a.m., and both Scotland Elementary School and Barlow Mountain Elementary School dismissed at 12:20 p.m.
Power issues stopped Amtrak service between Mystic and New Haven and Train 93 was stopped in New London because of power issues in the area.
A high wind warning was issued by the National Weather Service for the entire state through Monday night. Winds gusted as high as 63 mph Monday afternoon.
Cold weather will follow for today and Wednesday with highs only in the 20s (average highs should be in the low 40s).
