Newtown Gun Industry Group Sues State Over Gun Law

Connecticut's new gun law is being challenged again in court, with a locally-based national industry group claiming the legislation was passed illegally without proper public input or adequate review by state legislators.

The National Shooting Sports Foundation Inc., based in Newtown, Connecticut, filed the lawsuit on Monday in U.S. District Court against Gov. Dannel P. Malloy and other top state officials.

The organization wants a judge to strike down the law as invalid.

The General Assembly passed emergency legislation in April, which expanded Connecticut's assault weapons ban and background check requirements in the wake of the mass shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown.

But foundation senior vice president and general counsel Lawrence Keane said there was no emergency or statement of facts given that would allow the bill to bypass the traditional public hearing process.

The Attorney General's Office has not been served and declined to comment.
