Police Arrest Saw-Wielding Robbery Suspect

West Haven police arrested the man they said brandished a hand saw and stole a cash register from a Sam's Food Mart early Sunday morning.

According to police, a store employee at Sam's Food Mart, 667 Campbell Ave., called 911 to report that a man wearing a mask was acting suspiciously.

While enroute to the scene, police learned that the man brandished a hand saw, threatened the store clerk and stole the cash register, police said.

The robber ran north on Campbell toward George Street, police said.

Officers pursed a Chevrolet pickup and attempted to stop the truck, but it fled onto Interstate 95 North and was eventually lost after exiting onto Route 1 in New Haven, police said.

After investigating, police have identified Michael Peterson, 34, as the suspect.

According to Sgt. David Tammaro, Peterson was found at a home at 288 Front Ave.

Peterson was charged with multiple felonies, including robbery, larceny and engaging pursuit.

Police credited tips from the public in helping to apprehend Peterson.
