DEEP Works to Clean Up Milk Spill After Tanker Rollover Crash in Woodstock

NBC Connecticut

A tanker carrying milk has rolled over and spilled nearly 1,500 gallons of milk onto the road in Woodstock.

The Department of Energy and Environmental Protection (DEEP) said a 6,500 gallon tanker truck flipped on its side at about 2:30 p.m. Thursday.

DEEP officials said between 1,000 and 1,500 gallons of milk spilled into a dry swale on the side of the road. Environmental officers are helping with cleanup using two vacuum trucks to pick up the spilled milk.

Woodstock firefighters say Perrin Road was closed between Rocky Hill Road and Barber Road, but has since reopened.

Fire crews said spilt milk is considered a hazardous material incident because it "causes a biological oxygen hazard when it breaks down into water."

DEEP says there is no impact to waterways in the area. Cleanup efforts remain ongoing.

No injuries were reported during the crash. No additional information was immediately available.
