The public will have an opportunity to weight on the fate of plastic bags, straws and foam takeout food containers in Connecticut.
The legislature's Environment Committee will hold a public hearing Monday on a host of bills that ban such items or impose a fee.
One bill bars stores from providing or selling single-use plastic bags as of 2020. Violators could face fines. Another bill requires stores to charge customers at least 5 cents per bag. Democratic Gov. Ned Lamont has called for a 10-cent per bag tax.
Lamont says about one billion plastic bags are used annually in Connecticut, but the recycling rate is approximately 5 percent.
Other bills ban single-use polystyrene food containers and bar restaurants from providing single-use plastic straws unless requested by a customer.
