Route 128 was closed in Sharon at the Cornwall covered bridge Tuesday after the boom on an excavator hit the top of the bridge, according to state police. It has reopened.

The Connecticut Department of Transportation performed a safety inspection and was removing the damaged wood and other debris from the roof and road deck.

State police said there is significant non-structural damage to the bridge.

The West Cornwall Covered Bridge, one of the last covered bridges in Connecticut, is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

The iconic Connecticut landmark spans the Housatonic River and carries vehicular traffic on Route 128.
