On the Court, Tina Charles Is in Charge

UConn's Tina Charles is a school record holder: twice over.  The senior center scored 18 points and grabbed eight rebounds last night against Notre Dame to break all-time career marks held by two other Husky legends.

Charles surpassed Nykesha Sales' career record of 2,178 points and Rebecca Lobo's career rebounding mark of 1,268. UConn coach Geno Auriemma calls them both remarkable achievements.

"She told me when she came to Connecticut, that she wanted to be the best player in the country, and I would feel bad if she left and that hadn't happened. I'm thrilled for her and her family and I know it means an awful lot to her," Auriemma said after the game.

UConn beat the 7th ranked Fighting Irish, 76-51, to extend their winning streak to 69 games. The Huskies are closing in the women's collegiate consecutive victory record of 70. A  record the Huskies set from 2001 to 2003.

The Huskies play next on Sunday in the quarterfinals of the Big East Conference tournament at the XL Center in Hartford. The record-breaking win would come the following day in the tournament semis.
