Gladys Knight On Her First Performance Ever

The empress of soul, Ms. Gladys knight joins Harry on fame, her first performance ever and the formation of the Pips. “I’m assuming obviously you were the best of that group singing so everyone kind of took a backseat to you. Is that how the Pips were born?” asked Harry. “No that wasn’t how it was now,” she replied.” Well, we all sang and I wasn’t thinking about being a leader. Matter of fact there was times I didn’t want to sing, I sang because I was being obedient to my parents and as they taught us about the Lord giving us gifts and we should use them. That kind of thing. I didn’t think twice about it and when we came in we came in on equal level. We didn’t become Gladys Knight and the Pips until many many many years later. They used to call us The Knight Family and the first gig was a tea at the YWCA and we went and they paid us $10.” To watch the full interviews, check out “Harry.”
