Industrial Train Hits, Kills Man in Plainfield

A 39-year-old man was struck and killed in a train accident in Plainfield on Monday afternoon, according to police.

Police said the accident happened around 3 p.m. on a set of private industrial railroad tracks near Rawson Materials and Hopkins Fabrication at 351 Norwich Road/Route 12.

James A. Hawkins III, 39, of Coventry, Rhode Island, was struck by a privately owned locomotive leased to Rawson Materials, according to police.

Hawkins was pronounced dead at the scene. It's not clear how he ended up on the tracks.

No charges have been filed.

Plainfield police and the U.S. Department of Labor Mine Safety and Health Administration are investigating the accident.
